Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says ‘Canada will not turn inward’ as the world faces tests to its multilateral institutions. (Seth Wenig/The Associated Press) Canada will not step away from the challenges of an increasingly complex world, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand told the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. “When multilateral institutions are under threat, Canada will not turn inward,” Anand said in a speech that melded humanitarian and security concerns with Ottawa’s quest to secure foreign investment. “We will work toward a world where prosperity is shared, securityRead more

Canada ‘evaluating’ relationship with Israel after Qatar attack: Foreign affairs minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand and Minister of National Defence David McGuinty respond to questions at the Liberal caucus meeting in Edmonton on Wednesday. Anand reiterated that Canada saw Israel’s attack on Qatari soil unacceptable. (Amber Bracken/The Canadian Press) Canada’s foreign affairs minister said Wednesday that Ottawa is “evaluating” its relationship with Israel in the wake of that country’s attack in Qatar — but wouldn’t expand on what that evaluation entails. “We are evaluating the relationship with Israel. Of course, the attack yesterday on Qatar was one that wasRead more

The U.S. economy is thriving in spite of tariffs. Will it last?

By just about every indicator, the U.S. economy is holding up remarkably well. When Donald Trump launched his global trade war, economists and markets said his tariff policy would slow the economy, drive up prices and dramatically reduce global trade. And yet, stocks are at all-time highs, the country’s employment is strong, its economy is expanding and the expected surge in inflation hasn’t materialized. Canada’s economy has shown surprising resilience, as well, with consumer spending starting to pick up last month and unemployment declining. Economists told CBC News it’s unclear whether theRead more

Canada pledges $30M in Gaza aid, $10M for Palestinian Authority work toward statehood

While Canada is not joining France in recognizing a Palestinian state, it is funding the Palestinian Authority’s preparations to lead a globally recognized country that includes Gaza and the West Bank. Ottawa is also adding $30 million to its humanitarian funding for desperate Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. “The Palestinian question is at the heart of any hope for long-term stability in the Middle East,” Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand told a major United Nations conference on Monday in New York. “A workable Palestinian state needs legitimate, democratic governance thatRead more

Republican senator says Trump’s 51st state rhetoric not ‘constructive’ during Ottawa visit

A U.S. Republican senator says she doesn’t think President Donald Trump’s past comments about making Canada the 51st state are helpful as the two countries are locked in negotiations to reach some sort of trade agreement. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski was in Ottawa as part of a bipartisan delegation meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday morning. Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Murkowski was asked about Trump’s taunts about Canada becoming part of the U.S. “I cannot explain President Trump’s rhetoric about the 51st state. That is his statementRead more

Trump announces tariff rates for numerous countries – but not Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump sent letters to governments around the world on Monday informing them of the tariff rates he would impose starting Aug. 1 — though Canada’s July 21 deadline to reach a deal appears to remain. Trump said he would impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Japan and South Korea beginning next month, marking a new phase in the trade war he launched earlier this year. The letters sent to 14 countries so far — which included smaller U.S. exporters, like Serbia, Thailand and TunisiaRead more

Tornado fells trees after touching down in central Alberta

A tornado touched down in central Alberta on Wednesday, cutting a path through a treed area, but apparently sparing the area from any more serious damage. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a tornado warning Wednesday afternoon for an area west of Drayton Valley. Storm chaser Trenten Pentelichuk said he watched the twister touch down near the hamlet of Lodgepole — about 175 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. He’d been in the area all afternoon, waiting to see if the significant storm activity in the forecast would actually create a tornado. “AroundRead more

Canada wants to join Golden Dome missile-defence program, Trump says

Donald Trump says Canada has asked to join the missile-defence program his administration is building, adding a new chapter to a long-running cross-border saga. The U.S. president dropped that news in the Oval Office on Tuesday as he unveiled the initial plans for a three-year, $175 billion US project to build a multi-purpose missile shield he’s calling the Golden Dome. “Canada has called us and they want to be a part of it,” Trump said. “They want to hook in and they want to be a part of it.” Canada willRead more

Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ raises major questions: Can it be built? Should it be built? What’s Canada’s role?

U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, which Canada has expressed interest in joining, is raising questions about the project’s cost and feasibility as well as concerns about a space-based arms race. Trump’s plan is modelled after the Iron Dome that protects Israel — a land mass smaller than Vancouver Island — and aims to be more robust and hundreds of times bigger. The Iron Dome is mainly built to defend against lower-flying threats like short-range rockets, mortars and shells, while Trump and other top U.S. officials say the proposed Golden Dome wouldRead more
